SAY HELLOSarah Grey, RMT, NMT
Sarah Grey is a Registered Music Therapist and Neurologic Music Therapist in Canberra, ACT. Sarah is passionate about how music can access and edit our neural networks. Sarah primarily works to improve cognition, sensory capacity, attention and motor skills.
NMT is a research-guided clinical model that is driven by advances in neuroscience and the understanding of the perception, production, and performance of music and how music can influence and change non-musical brain and behavior function. Neurologic Music Therapists have completed special training through the NMT academy.
At Sound Effect Music Therapy we target specific areas depending on your goals. For clients with a brain-related diagnosis or injury, these may be things like speech and language, motor skills including gait, sensory dysfunctions, memory, or cognition. Other clients may wish to regulate or process emotions, develop communication confidence and sociability, or to just plain get their feelings out and feel oxygenated and energised.
They say "where words fail, music speaks", which is a good way to start thinking about music therapy. Music can easily access and re-wire parts of our brain, especially if we're having fun at the same time. In music therapy, we use the properties of sound to streamline feelings, functions and health by making and strengthening new connections in your brain.
Music therapy may include playing instruments to improve co-ordination, motor skills and creativity, listening to (or writing) songs to express or process emotion and memory, or playing musical games to improve cognitive function.
You can expect to listen to some music (either recorded or live), and have an opportunity to make some music yourself if you would like to. You will also have the opportunity to play instruments you haven't tried before. The client is not expected to do any homework or practice.
All of this evidence-based practice takes place behind the cover of a fun, interactive activity.
We are able to accept self-managed and plan-managed NDIS clients, as well as privately funded clients. We are currently fully booked but you are welcome to join the waiting list.
Music therapy targets everything from neo-natal wellbeing to palliative care, physical co-ordination to brain rehabilitation, depression to mental health, and almost everything in between. We work in conjunction with occupational and speech therapists to target similar clinical goals, and we can be the conduit for increased confidence and success in daily life for autistic clients.
